The Adjustment Bureau Essay

Intro:

I am going to look at how certain film techniques are used in a scene in the Adjustment Bureau movie, directed by George Nolfi, to show my idea. I am going to look at how lighting, camera shots and costumes were used in the movie to portray my idea: If you fight hard enough, you can control your own fate. The scene begins with David and Elise running away from the members of the Adjustment Bureau, and finally find themselves surrounded and cornered on a rooftop. They kiss and as the camera spins around them, the members of the Bureau leave. After the kiss it is only them, and a member of the Bureau called Thompson, who tells them that they are stupid to think they can control their own fate and rewrite the plan. Then Davids friends, also a member of the Bureau shows up with a letter for Thompson, telling him that the plan has been rewritten and they are free. The scene ends with David and Elise walking down a street hand in hand.

Paragraph 1: lighting.

I am first going to look at how lighting was used in The Adjustment Bureau to show that if you fight hard enough, you can control your own fate. Lighting is a key part of The Adjustment Bureau and is used to set the mood and elaborate on some certain scenes. An example of how lighting was used in The Adjustment Bureau to show or tell the reader something without actually using dialogue is when Harry has announced that they are free to go and that the Chairman has rewritten the plan so that they are meant to be together. The sun comes out from behind the clouds and the entire scene is basked in bright, golden sunlight, after this the entire scene was gloomy and dark, almost like a storm was brewing. While the scenes lighting was ominous, only bad things were happening (e.g. when David and Elise were cornered by the members of the bureau and talked to Thompson), but as soon as he was ordered to back down and Harry announced that the plan had been rewritten, the sun came out. The sun coming out represented a positive, new change to their lives. The Director of the Adjustment Bureau used the sunlight, and lack of it, to show when things were looking worse for wear, and when things were looking good.

Paragraph 2: costume

I am now going to talk about how costumes and clothes were used in the Adjustment Bureau to show that if you fight hard enough, you can control your own fate. Costume is very important, especially in the Adjustment Bureau as it separates the members of the Adjustment Bureau from regular people or other main, relevant characters. This is because the members of the Adjustment Bureau always wear a hat, usually a fedora. The hat allows them to travel through doors and pretty much teleport around the city. The members of the Adjustment Bureau also usually always wear a dark coloured suit or something of the sort, unless they are in disguise, when they wear plain clothes, but always accessories by a hat of some sort. An example of this is the last scene of our study. David and Elise are walking down the street holding hands, and they begin to notice all the members of the Adjustment Bureau walking past them, sometimes wearing suits, sometimes wearing plain clothes, but always sporting a hat of some sort. In comparison to the members of the Adjustment Bureau, David and Elise are wearing a white shirt and pants, and a dark dress, respectively. This makes them stand out from the members of the Adjustment Bureau, which is helpful as they are easy to spot in a scene with a lot of members of the Adjustment Bureau. These costumes separate the two sides effectively, almost making a dark and light side. It also makes David seem like the good guy fighting the bad guys. I believe the director did this to make us root for David and Elise, and root against the members of the Adjustment Bureau in some way. This makes it easier to feel happy when David and Elise are, and we can relate more to scenes where things go good for them (e.g. when the sun comes out after David and Elise learn the Chairman has rewritten the plan to allow them to be together.

Paragraph 3: camera shots

Lastly I am going to look at how camera shots were used in the Adjustment Bureau to portray my idea, that if you fight hard enough, you can control your own fate. The director of the Adjustment Bureau used a large variety of camera angles in the movie, and also the scene we are looking at. These camera angles were used to show Characters in thr scene, lighting around the scene, import faces and dialogue. The angle of the camera shot can decide how we perceive a character. Some of the Camera shots we saw in this scene of the Adjustment Bureau were:close up, mid shot, long shot, wide shot, over the shoulder and panning around. These were used very closely with lighting, both showing each other off and complementing one another in different shots. An example of this is when the sun comes out, the shot at that moment is a wide, extreme long shot of the city skyline and landscape, so this fully captures the moment the lighting changes and the sun comes out. I think the director did this to make sure a viewer couldn’t miss a significant happening such as that.

Conclusion:

In conclusion, The director of The Adjustment Bureau used lighting, costume and camera shots together in the scene to help portray the idea that if you fight hard enough, you can control your own fate. All of these film techniques compliment each other and work together beautifully to make this a very pleasing scene to watch.
